SAWC Competition Rules and Guidelines

Rules for the monthly SAWC Competitions
  1. Presentation. Use good quality A4 paper and type, one-and-a-half or double spacing, on one side only.
  2. Provide a Cover Page for your entry. This must contain the title of the work, your pseudonym, and the number of words. The author’s actual name or address must not appear on the cover page or anywhere in the submitted work. Only your entry form and the sase (self-addressed, stamped envelope) contain your actual name. 
  3. Pay the entry fee (refer to General Rule 2 Competitions). You may submit more than one entry, each with the prescribed fee.
  4. A story, poem, article or script, which has been published in a commercial magazine or in an anthology, bearing an ISBN or has won a prize in a competition, may not be entered.
  5. Competition entries that are not received by the deadline (last day of the month), will not be considered for judging and will not be given a critique. No correspondence will be entered into regarding lost or late entries.
  6. Competitions are open to members of the Circle only and must be their own work.
  7. A competition entry form (or facsimile) must accompany each submission.

General

  • Entrants, who did not win a prize in a particular competition, may re-enter their work, amended if necessary, in a subsequent competition.
  • Entry fees are now R30 per entry, unless otherwise specified. If you are paying by cheque, please include a R12.50 deposit fee to the total of your competition entry fee. If the entry fee is less than R30 and members pay R30, the difference will be accepted as a donation – Thank you! If the fee is R30 and members pay less, your entry will be returned to you, without being judged.
  • The prize money is: First — R100, Second — R70, and Third — R50 (unless otherwise determined by the SAWC)
  • Points are awarded as follows: 1st — 5, 2nd — 4, 3rd — 3, and Highly Commended — 2. These points are added together over the year and awards are made to the persons receiving the highest total.
  • Individual critiques will accompany each returned entry, be that via snailmail or e-mail.
  • The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Entries will be judged for literary merit, creative imagination and ability to enthral.
  • All competition entries must be in English.

Please note that with regard to requirements:
~ 'story' means a fiction story, ~ 'article' means non-fiction, and ~ if anything else is required it will be specified.

  • It must include a reference (first three letters of your surname + you initial and the month of entry, e.g. MomG-May).
