Notice is hereby given that the 51st Annual General Meeting of the South African Writers’ Circle will be held at the Westville Library at 11:00 on Saturday 18 February 2012. This meeting will take place before the commencement of the usual SAWC open meeting. Members need to nominate individuals to fill the duties of Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. Nominations for these positions may be sent to the Vice-Chairman, George Momogos at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it on or before 3 February 2012. Please note that any person nominated must agree to the nomination. For the information of all members, the motions are as follows: Motion 1: To increase the membership fees for 2012. This would mean the following: The subscription for 2012 would increase from R170 to R190 (11.8%) for individual members and from 130 to R145 (11.8%) for pensioners and students [subs for couples increases from R230 to R255 (11%) for ordinary couples and from R170 to R190 (11.8%) for pensioned couples]. Motivation: While this increase is above the current average government published rate of inflation for 2011 (which is expected to rise in 2012) it is in line with the increase in costs of running and managing the Circle. Motion 2: To amend clause 9.6, which states that: The AGM shall “6. Decide on the annual subscription fee payable by members ...” and move it to the powers of the Committee (Clause 7.5): The Committee shall have the power to decide on the annual subscription fee payable by members in order to promote the objectives of the Circle. Motivation: Membership fees are payable annually in advance and since the AGM is held in February/March it is not practical to delay the decision regarding fee escalations until then. The Committee will make this decision in a responsible manner and in alignment with budgetary requirements. It is hoped that members will accordingly increase the amount of feedback given to the Committee. |
